Under Soviet occupation the Lithuanians were prohibited from religiously expressing themselves. This hill became a monument of resistance and solidarity, as brave Lithuanians would set up hundreds of crosses at night. Today it serves as a living testament to that resistance - "living" because it grows with each day as visitors are encouraged to plant their own crosses alongside the now thousands present.
